Yesterday we had a cardinal who didn't want to share the platform feeder. He kept chasing the house finches away. But then a red-winged blackbird showed up. I would have thought blackbirds were higher in the pecking order, but the cardinal fought him. Or tried to. Cardinal was mad but blackbird didn't care. I was amused.

Today a cardinal didn't have any trouble sharing with some finches.

Today is sunny, breezy, and cool.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.  A flock of blackbirds is flying around and singing.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 3/29/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 3/29/26 -- I trimmed brush around the Japanese maple tree.

EDIT 3/29/26 -- I trimmed brush between the parking lot and wild cherry grove, trying to reestablish a mow path there.

EDIT 3/29/26 -- I trimmed more brush along the mow path.

EDIT 3/29/26 -- I trimmed more brush along the mow path.

I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, plus a fox squirrel.

EDIT 3/29/26 -- I filled a trolley with sticks and dumped it in the firepit.

I saw a pair of red admiral butterflies courting.  It's way early for them to appear.

I am done for the night.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 3/28/26 -- I did more work on the tomato cage.

EDIT 3/28/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 3/28/26 -- I sowed chives, catnip, and lemon bergamot in former fruit boxes that should make good upcycled pots.

EDIT 3/28/26 -- I fastened the tomato cage to the new picnic table.  It's much less wobbly now.

EDIT 3/28/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 3/28/26 -- I did some weeding around the forest garden.  There's a mayapple putting up leaves.  :D

I am done for the night.

Saturday

It is a chilly Saturday morning here.

A nice surprise visitor was a House Finch. The Canada Goose couple has been by almost every day this week.
I had some time yesterday to visit a couple of nearby trails to check for any storm damage. Luckily everything is in good shape.

The sunset last weekend looked very simple, but I liked its casual glow stretched on the clouds. Less than 10 minutes later my partner called me to come look at the sky and the red in it was astonishing.

Today is cloudy, cold, and damp. It stormed last night, so we finally got a good soaking rain.

I fed the birds. I've seen a male cardinal.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 3/27/26 -- I cleared dead stems from the telephone pole garden.

EDIT 3/27/26 -- I cleared dead stems from the septic garden.

I've seen a flock of sparrows.

EDIT 3/27/26 -- I cut four poles to make a tomato cage. This is the general concept.

I've seen a flock of house finches.

EDIT 3/27/26 -- I placed the poles around a large pot by the new picnic table garden, then started lashing them together. It needs more work and support, but at least it's started.

EDIT 3/27/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 3/27/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

Wednesday was just another snowy spring day when this guy showed up!

OMG! A Northern shrike!!!

I was upstairs in my office when I heard the budgies flapping and didn't see the problem at first.

Then I saw this beautiful, but deadly bird!

He flew at the window and scared the budgies again, so I moved the cage away. He sat there for a good long time and flew away. He was not bothered at all by me standing right at the window looking at him.

Shrikes impale small birds and animals "for later", so I'm going to keep an eye on my bird feeder because I don't want my rose bush to become a graveyard. I haven't seen it again so far today, so perhaps the snow derailed his travel plans like everyone else lately.

Today is mostly sunny, windy, and hot. It is 87°F outside. The promised pouring rain has not appeared, although it drizzled a bit last night. This is abnormally dry for March. :/

I fed the birds. I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 3/26/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 3/26/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

It's a little cooler now; the high was 88°F today.

I've seen a fox squirrel at the hopper feeder.

Today is cloudy and mild.

I fed the birds. I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

I saw the first butterfly today, a tiny periwinkle one that might be an eastern tailed blue. It was visiting the grape hyacinths blooming by the log garden.

EDIT 3/25/26 -- We visited the Charleston Food Forest and Coles County Community Garden.

On the way into town, we saw a herd of deer and a tortoiseshell fox. Very clearly a fox, with a white tail-tip, but with streaks and patches of black and cinnamon; not the usual rust-red of a red fox nor the salt-and-pepper of a gray fox. Fascinating. Excellent camouflage.

EDIT 3/25/26 -- I planted two clumps of crosne knotroots, one by the maple tree and one in a pot on the new picnic garden.

EDIT 3/25/26 -- I planted five clumps of Egyptian walking onions including below the barrel garden, mulberry tree in the house yard, and several saplings in the savanna.

EDIT 3/25/26 -- I planted groundnuts in a trough pot and a large pot by the new picnic table garden, and under the apricot tree.

EDIT 3/25/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

It's been drizzling on and off today.

I am done for the night.

Today is partly sunny and cool.

I fed the birds. I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 3/24/26 -- I took some pictures around the yard. Spring flowers have been hammered by hard freezes, but some are still blooming.

I've seen some mourning doves.

EDIT 3/24/26 -- I transplanted wild chives from the east edge to the septic garden, and from the south lot to the east end of the savanna. There are still some more clumps I want to move.

Honeybees are out in force and currently focused on the little trough water garden.

I've seen a large mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.

EDIT 3/24/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 3/24/26 -- I transplanted wild chives to the forest garden and contorta willow bed. I think some Egyptian walking onions may have survived by the contorta willow in addition to the septic garden.

EDIT 3/24/26 -- I transplanted wild chives to the maple tree and the wildflower garden.

I dragged two large limbs to the wildflower garden, since part of its log border is rotting down.

I found a fallen white pine twig and broke off several pieces to see if I can root them.

EDIT 3/24/26 -- I sowed Partial Shade Wildflower Mix in the forest garden and the tulip bed.

EDIT 3/24/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 3/24/26 -- I sowed 'Choko Baby' pak choi in a trough of the new picnic table garden, and Partial Shade Wildflower Mix in the daffodil bed.

I've seen a male cardinal.

I am done for the night.

Today is partly cloudy and chilly, now in the 40s. Yesterday went from a high of 87°F to just below freezing. >_<

I fed the birds. I've seen a large flock of sparrows, a mixed flock of blackbirds including a redwing, and two mourning doves.

I put out water for the birds.

We measured the parking lot and driveway.

EDIT 3/23/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I've seen a pair of house finches.

EDIT 3/23/26 -- I sowed 4 pots (each with 2 seeds) of 'Sugar Ann' snap peas and 4 pots (each with 2 seeds) of 'Avalanche' snow peas on the new picnic table garden. My plan is to sow the other pots when I plant tomatoes, peppers, or whatever and then see which does best.

EDIT 3/23/26 -- I cleaned up the 4 giant pots by the septic garden.

EDIT 3/23/26 -- I did some trimming in the savanna.

I set up air-layering on the excellent mulberry beside the old fishpond.

I've seen a female cardinal at the hopper feeder.

EDIT 3/23/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I am done for the night.

Today is sunny and hot. It is 85°F already. >_<

I fed the birds. I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, several brown-headed cowbirds, and a mourning dove.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 3/22/26 -- We hauled the first three garden bags to the old picnic table. It's 86°F now and too hot to do everything at once. :/

EDIT 3/22/26 -- We hauled the next three garden bags to the old picnic table.

The first grape hycacinth is blooming randomly in the middle of the house yard, pollinated by tiny native bees.

EDIT 3/22/26 -- I did a bit more work outside.

It's 87°F now, which is just ridiculous for March.

EDIT 3/22/26 -- We hauled the giant bag of raised bed soil to the side of the garden shed, where it's meant to fill in a hollow area.

EDIT 3/22/26 -- I put a few scoops of composted manure in each of the top and bottom row of large pots along the north side of the new picnic table.  This bag wasn't broken down as fully as usual.  :/

I stepped out the door and it was <i>cold</i>.  I checked the temperature: 57°F.  Yes, it dropped 30 degrees is another an hour.  For fucksake.

The first purple violet and the apricot tree are blooming.

EDIT 3/22/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

It is now 47°F with howling wind. 0_o

EDIT 3/22/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I am done for the night.  The weather has been two different kinds of crappy all day.

EDIT 3/22/26 -- It got down just below freezing overnight.

Today is sunny and hot.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a small mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 3/21/26 -- I put topsoil in the four large pots that sit on the ground along the north side of the picnic table.

I also put the indoor flats of tree sprouts and squash sprouts outside to get some sun and air.

It is so hot outside as to limit my activity.  In mid-March.  This annoys me.

EDIT 3/21/26 -- I put topsoil in the four large pots that sit on the ground along the south side of the picnic table.  There is just a little left now.

It's 81°F now. :/

EDIT 3/21/26 -- I spread the last of the topsoil in other pots around the new picnic table.

It's 82°F now.  Fuck climate change.

EDIT 3/21/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I've seen two mourning doves in the forest garden.

Image embed ettiquite question

I'm working on a post that discusses use of color in a series' character designs and peripheral media, so I have to embed lots of images in order to make my point. I've been designing "photosets" by hand using css and html. The simplest way for me to make these image sets is to have a grid of images, where all the images in a row shrink and grow to match the width of the visible post-space.

However, some images, even if placed in a "photoset" with this technique, still stretch a page vertically quite badly. For example, a full image of a character standing in place with no background is often very vertical. This ends up visually "overwhelming" the text, which I don't want to do. Yes, putting the image under a cut prevents it from being annoying in reading page and journal-page views, but I also want the image to look nice while visible, and not overwhelm the paragraphs above and below it.

Is there any common etiquette for the maximum height (in pixels) of an embedded in-post image in a post published to a community?

Some more Dreamwidth tips.
